Franz Marc (1880-1916) was a German painter who was influenced by the french impressionists, the Cubists and the Expressionists;. He founded the art association "The Blue Rider" with Wassily Kandinsky. Most of his paintings are of animals whom he saw as innocent and closer to nature. His paintings of cats are vibrant and beautiful and filled with an obvious affection for felines.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844 - 1926) was an American painter who spent most of her adult life in France. She was a close friend of Edgar Degas and was herself a noted Impressionist painter. Many of her paintings depict the social and private lives of women and children and was involved in the sufragette movement in later life. She was admitted to the Legion d'honneur by France in 1904.

Henriette Ronner was the most popular Dutch woman painter of her time (1821-1909) and was internationally famous. She was a prolific painter who specialized in portraits of cats and dogs.
